OUR MAJOR ACTIVITIES

To help strengthen the physical rehabilitation sector in El Salvador and in other Latin American countries, we will support stakeholders in organizing and attending events where they can exchange experiences and best practices among themselves – for instance, on collecting data and developing national plans for physical rehabilitation. These events include a regional forum for the social services of Ecuador, El Salvador and Nicaragua, and ISRI-led meetings between the Salvadoran and Nicaraguan authorities on materials importation procedures. We will also meet with CONAIPD, ISRI, and the UDB to encourage the creation of an entity at MoH level to oversee the national physical rehabilitation sector, and support CONAIPD’s efforts to establish a multi-sectoral policy platform to advocate legislation protecting the rights of persons with disabilities. Associations of prosthetists/orthotists and of students at the UDB will receive funding for some of their activities.

We will maintain our technical support for the UDB’s distance-learning modules and courses on physical rehabilitation and on prostheses/orthoses, to help service providers (including ISRI personnel) and students from the region hone their skills; we will also sponsor instructors’ participation in courses abroad. In the first half of 2016, we gave scholarships to 14 students from neighboring countries, and in 2017, the possibility of internships at ISRI for them and other students will be explored.

In May 2016, the UDB’s director attended a training course on conducting both patient-satisfaction survey and quality technical assessment that we developed, and subsequently, helped train others to do so. This will pave the way for an agreement with the ISRI and the UDB on the use of this survey at ISRI. The recommendations based on these will be implemented with our guidance, so that ISRI can further improve the quality of its services. Personnel from the UDB and ISRI will also be trained in administration, to strengthen these institutions’ management capacities.

To help economically vulnerable persons with disabilities have access to the services they need, we will continue to support the ISRI centre and its satellite units in delivering free and good-quality rehabilitation services. For instance, we will give them, as well as to UDB, financial support and technical advice for acquiring raw materials. Five athletes will be fitted with customized devices at the UDB, with our assistance.
