The inclusion of persons with disabilities in the society is a complex process, that involves a multi-sectoral approach and exchanges between the different stakeholders. In order to promote and encourage exchanges and discussions, MoveAbility organized, in collaboration with the Consejo Nacional de Discapacidades from Ecuador, the first regional forum on disability public policies.
The “Intercambio de Experiencias sobre Políti ca Publica de Discapacidades” Forum which took place in April 2017 in Quito, brought together representatives from Ecuador, Nicaragua and El Salvador. For three days, the theme of inclusion of Persons with Disabilities was discussed.
The Ecuadorian First Lady, Mrs. Rocío González de Moreno, who has committed to the cause, gave the opening speech. She underlined the importance of cooperation mechanisms to implement relevant actions towards persons with disabilities. She also highlighted the great symbolic value of this forum for their recognition in Latin America.
The forum, who lastet three days, gathered many different stakeholders. The participants shared and discussed their respective best practices to improve the inclusion of people with disabilities. Dr. Alex Gonzalez, President of the Instituto de Rehabilitation Integral, organized a visit of the Rehabilitation Center. During the visit, he demonstrated the success of an identification system for persons with disabilities set up by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Health. The forum ended on a musical tone with a national dance performed by the students of an inclusive school. Dr. Gonzalez concluded with a deeper reflection on the meaning of inclusion: “For me, inclusion means: everybody in, nobody out!”
